Terance Ward made two free throws with 26 seconds remaining to give UMBC a 64-62 victory over Long Island University last night in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Ray Rivera, who finished with a career-high 19 points for LIU (2-10, 2-4 Northeast Conference), tied it at 62 on a three-pointer with 43 seconds left. Rivera, who scored 13 of LIU's final 15 points, also had a four-point play during a 7-1 run in which the Blackbirds erased a 61-55 deficit.
Brad Martin led the Retrievers (7-5, 6-0), who have won seven of eight games after an 0-4 start, with 12 points, while Isaac Green had 10.
Issiah Francis added 14 points and Richie Parker 10 for LIU.
St. Francis, N.Y., 78, Mount St. Mary's 77: Ray Minlend hit two free throws with 27 seconds left to give the Terriers the victory over the Mountaineers in a Northeast Conference game in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Greg Harris paced Mount St. Mary's (4-7, 2-3) with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Tony Hayden added 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Mountaineers, who lost their fourth straight game.
St. Francis (6-4, 3-1) took a 76-71 lead on Greg Nunn's jumper with 1: 59 left, but the Mountaineers responded with three-pointers by Harris and Aaron Herbert to move ahead 77-76 with 34 seconds left.
South Carolina State led by five when Wiatre and James Jones ignited a 10-2 run with consecutive three-pointers.
Coppin State (2-12, 1-3) trailed 35-31 at halftime but tied the game at 53 on Fred Warrick's three-pointer.
Morgan, which shot 37 percent (18 of 49) and committed 21 turnovers, has lost four straight since beating Coppin State on Dec. 12. Rasheed Sparks led the Bears with 15 points.
Messiah 71, Western Maryland 60: Larry Johnson came off the bench to score 22 points as the Falcons (6-4) beat the host Green Terror. Western Maryland (3-8) lost its fifth straight.
Mount St. Mary's 52, St. Francis, N.Y., 45: Megan Gardiner led all scorers with 22 points as the Mountaineers (7-4, 5-0) won their sixth straight to remain unbeaten in the Northeast Conference. Gardiner had 16 points in the second half.
The Mountaineers clinched the game in the final two minutes on free throws by Deanna Butters and Katie Walton.
UMBC 76, Long Island 54: The Retrievers (6-5, 4-1) had four double-digit scorers on the way to a Northeast Conference win over the host Blackbirds (1-11, 1-5). Jami Lange led all scorers with 24 points and 12 rebounds, and UMBC also got 13 points from Maggie McDevitt.
Coppin State 85, South Carolina State 65: Keisha Brooks had 23 points and 10 rebounds as the Eagles (5-7, 3-1) ended a four-game losing streak with a MEAC win in Orangeburg, S.C. Trisha Allen added 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Morgan State 67, North Carolina A&T; 39: The visiting Bears (3-6, 2-2) held the Aggies (3-9, 2-3) to four field goals in the second half and 24 percent shooting overall in a runaway MEAC win.
