Friend and foe alike have to be wondering what it's going to take to hang a defeat on the Milwaukee Wave's brilliant goalkeeper, Victor Nogueira, at the Bradley Center.
On Saturday, just a couple of days short of a year since it lost a home game, the Wave was beaten by the Montreal Impact, 8-5.
The team's overall streak was ended at 22, and the season's run was halted at eight.
Nogueira was in goal but, as the fates allowed, his home winning streak continues at 42. Milwaukee was ahead, 5-4, when Nogueira was whistled off for tripping.
His backup, Carmine Isacco, subbed for a couple of minutes and allowed a shootout one-pointer followed by a power play goal, giving Montreal the lead and what proved to be the winning point.
Thank your lucky stars, Victor.
In case anybody asks, the all-time record for home wins in the NPSL is 32 straight by the Canton Invaders back in 1985-87.
Around the league
NPSL schedule quirk No. 643: Edmonton Drillers finally caught the three games in three days schedule, playing in Buffalo, Detroit and Milwaukee on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Bet they weren't intimidated by the crowds.
You want stats? Some figure filbert in the league office figured out that Hector Marinaro of Cleveland and Kevin Koetters of Kansas City are the only 40-40-40 men in NPSL history, 40 goals, 40 assists and 40 blocked shots in a season. The Blast has fallen behind Marinaro and Joe Reiniger in the three-point goals race, 5-4.
Kevin Hundelt of St. Louis is NPSL Player of the Week, a rarity for a defender. But Hundelt had a couple of big goals during a pair of Ambush victories last weekend and was all over the place with nine blocked shots.
Second was Gino DiFlorio of Harrisburg, who had four goals and two assists in the Heat's 23-19 win over Philadelphia.
DiFlorio's big game boosted him past Rudy Pikuzinki (Buffalo) into fifth place on the all-time scoring list, 1,137 to 1,132.
The name game: Florida Thundercats defender James Dunn says, "I'm glad I can remember going to the hospital," after being in a head-to-head collision with Shawn Boney of Cleveland. Boney is 6-7 and 265 pounds and he's not a goalie. Wendell Regis, who played in Baltimore last season, has earned his second 15-day contract with Harrisburg. Philadelphia has lost .. defender Mali Walton for the season to a torn Achilles' tendon.
Welcome, stranger: The Buffalo Blizzard celebrated its millionth fan through the turnstiles (in seven seasons) the other evening. The Philadelphia Kixx are unbeaten at home (6-0), but it's a little different story on the road (1-6). Maybe the Blast shouldn't leave the field at halftime: The team has been outscored by 22 points in the third period after outscoring the opposition by four points in the second quarter.
Alumni report: Bo Vuckovic has had 56 points in 13 games for Kansas City and Detroit this season. Kevin Sloan, with 14 goals to date, is five away from 300 career-wise. The "School Day" promotion saw 2,714 youngsters post for a late-morning game in Montreal three days before Christmas. Unfortunately, the home team lost to Wichita, 10-4. The Blast has a similar promotion Feb. 9 (10: 35 a.m.) against Milwaukee. Florida's scoring by quarter against the Blast on Saturday -- 1 6 0 9 -- points up how inconsistent the team can be.
