Taneytown Volunteer Fire Co. named Mervin Staub as Firefighter of the Year for 1998 at its annual banquet.

Staub was honored for his countless hours of fund-raising activities.

Also honored with Citizen Awards were Tony Bitzel and Jim Fleischman for helping to get residents out of an apartment fire in August.

The company received money from several sources: $35,000 from the Ladies Auxiliary, $17,000 from the city of Taneytown; $18,000 from bingo; $2,000 from the Junior Fire Department; and $2,900 from the 300 Club.
