Woman accused of having sex with boy Laurel encounter began on Internet, police say

A 30-year-old Pittsburgh woman is accused of having sex with a 15-year-old Howard County boy during the weekend in a Laurel motel after meeting the teen-ager in an Internet chat room, police said.

Laurel police arrested Adriane Ione Smith Monday and charged her with a third-degree sex offense and second-degree assault.

She was being held yesterday at the Prince George's County Detention Center in lieu of $40,000 bail.

The woman and the boy met in the Vampire Chat Room, police said, and exchanged several e-mail messages and telephone calls.

Smith told them she drove Saturday from Pittsburgh to Howard County, where she picked up the teen-ager, police said.

They spent the weekend at the Quality Inn, police said.

Police said Smith told them that she initially thought the teen-ager was 16 but later learned he was 15.

In Maryland, it is against the law for a person 21 or older to perform sexual acts on someone 15 or younger.

Sunday, worried about her missing son, the boy's mother combed his computer files and found e-mail messages from a woman in Pittsburgh, Howard County police said.

As county police questioned the mother at the family's North Laurel apartment that day, Smith drove into the driveway and dropped off the teen-ager, police said.

Police questioned Smith, who told authorities she had sexual encounters with the youth at the motel, according to court records.

When police took Smith into custody, the 15-year-old objected and became disorderly, officials said.

"He was a willing participant," said Sgt. Morris Carroll, spokesman for county police. "But it doesn't matter. He was too young."

After interviewing the woman, county police turned the investigation over to Laurel authorities.
