Ronald C. Reid, 92, truck driver, Mason
Ronald C. Reid, a retired truck driver and Mason, died Dec. 21 of a heart attack at University of Maryland Medical Center. He was 92 and had lived for many years on West Lanvale Street.
Mr. Reid joined McCormick Asbestos Co. as a truck driver in 1941 and retired in 1974.
Before joining McCormick, he was a waiter at the old Hotel Rennert, Saratoga and Liberty streets, whose kitchen was renowned for its traditional Maryland dishes. While in his 20s, he operated a beauty salon at Lafayette Avenue and Gilmor Street.
Born in Port Maria, Jamaica, Mr. Reid came to Baltimore with his parents and was educated in public schools and the Apex School of Cosmetology.
He joined Prince Hall Masons in 1935 and was a former imperial potentate. He also joined the Elks Pride of Baltimore and had served as its exalted ruler.
In 1930, he married Fanniejoe A. Nixon, a caterer and recipe columnist for the Afro-American newspaper, who died in 1973.
Services were held Sunday.
He is survived by three daughters, Patty Reid DeLotch of Randallstown, and Desiree Dorsey and Clovia Sampson, both of Baltimore; a son, Kirby Reid of Baltimore; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Dr. Daniel I. Welliver, a longtime family practice physician in Westminster, died of a heart attack at home Friday. He was 70.
Dr. Welliver graduated from Westminster High School in 1946 and received his college diploma four years later from Western Maryland College. Active in alumni affairs, he was honored as Alumnus of the Year in 1984 and received the Trustee Alumni Award in 1990. This year, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters.
He earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1954 and was an intern at the University of Michigan.
He was a member of the Maryland Academy of Family Practice, the American Medical Association, the Carroll County Medical Society and the American College of Sports Medicine. From 1972 to 1997, he was medical director of Westminster Nursing and Convalescent Center.
An avid football fan, he was director of the Maryland chapter of the National Football Foundation.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Westminster United Methodist Church, Main and Center streets.
Dr. Welliver is survived by his wife of 47 years, the former Mary Ada Twigg; four children, Paul S. Welliver of Baltimore, Ellen Welliver Nicodemus of Walkersville, Klee A. Welliver of Westminster and Thomas D. Welliver of Raleigh, N.C.; four brothers, the Rev. L. Allyn Welliver of Lewisburg, Pa., the Rev. Kenneth Welliver of Buckhannon, W.Va., Dr. Paul Welliver of State College, Pa., and Dr. Glenn Welliver of Greencastle, Ind.; and eight grandchildren. Kevin Raynard Diggs, a Baltimore truck driver, died Dec. 26 of pneumonia at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was 33.
Mr. Diggs was a truck driver for Accustaff Inc., a temporary services agency, and a part-time carpenter who helped his father build decks and porches.
The Baltimore native was educated in public schools. He was an avid basketball fan and had an extensive collection of players' cards.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Christ Temple Apostolic Church, 701 Cherry Hill Road.
He is survived by his father, Purnell Diggs; his mother, Jacqueline Diggs; his fiancee, Sherry Gilyard; a son, Kevin Diggs II; a daughter, Cassandra Erica Diggs; four sisters, Monica Diggs, Daisy Bellamy,Kim Bellamy and La Shaune Moss; and a brother, Jimmy Phillips. All are of Baltimore. Natasha Sachiko Wakida, a lacrosse player and school mascot at the University of California at Santa Cruz, died in an Eastern Shore car accident in Grasonville on Friday. She was 21.
In 1991, the year her mother died, Ms. Wakida moved from her home in Grass Valley, Calif., to Queenstown to live with her uncle. She graduated in 1996 from Queen Anne's County High School, where she lettered in three sports and was a member of the National Honor Society.
She played lacrosse at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and this year made her debut as the school's mascot, the banana slug.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Queen Anne's County High School in Centreville.
Ms. Wakida is survived by her uncle, Jim McComb of Queenstown; her father, Takao Wakida, and her sister, Sara Wakida, both of Grass Valley, Calif.
Randy M. Bahre, 31, diving company employee
Randy M. Bahre, a deep-sea diver, died Thursday in a motor vehicle accident in Alabama.
He was 31 and had lived in Joppa since 1989.
Mr. Bahre was an employee of Maryland Diving Co.
Born in Chicopee, Mass., he graduated from Easthampton (Mass.) High School in 1984 and served in the Army for eight years.
Services will be at 9 a.m. tomorrow at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 17 Clark St., Easthampton.
He is survived by his wife, the former Christa Faeth; two daughters, Samantha Bahre and Sabrina Bahre; and a son, Randy M. Bahre Jr., all of Joppa; his father, Ronald E. Bahre of Easthampton; four brothers, Ronald E. Bahre Jr. of Cheyenne, Wyo., Robert A. Bahre of Enid, Okla., and Richard G. Bahre and Rodney P. Bahre, both of Richmond Hill, Ga.; and a sister, Carole Ruehl of Agawam, Mass.
Alice A.G. Knight, 73, high school teacher
Alice Amanda Gillespie Knight, a former high school teacher and a Towson resident for more than 50 years, died of cancer Saturday at her home. She was 73.
Born in Mappsville, Va., Mrs. Knight graduated from what now is Towson University with a bachelor's degree in history. She later earned a master's degree in secondary education.
She taught for more than 10 years at Lutheran High School of Baltimore.
Services are scheduled for 10: 30 a.m. today at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Loch Raven Boulevard and Belvedere Avenue.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Leroy Jerome Knight; a son, Lee Jerome Knight of Ellicott City; a daughter, Emalee Amanda Knight Smith of New Freedom, Pa.; and four grandchildren.
