Gaetano "Tom" Vella, 100, who was credited with developing the Italian-style cheese industry in Northern California and southern Oregon more than 60 years ago, died Tuesday in Sonoma, Calif.

He was founder and owner of Vella Cheese Co. in Sonoma and the Rogue River Valley Cheese factory in Central Point, Ore.
