A former private school teacher was sentenced to probation yesterday after she pleaded guilty to one count of child abuse stemming from a sexual relationship with a student seven years ago.
Joanne G. Kahn, 47, was given probation by Circuit Judge Thomas J. Bollinger Sr. As part of her probation, she "must not teach high school or younger," according to court documents.
Kahn of Mount Washington was an English and drama teacher at Calvert Hall College in Towson, according to court documents, when she began an affair with a 17-year-old student. The affair continued until he was a junior in college, when she ended it.
The student, whose name is not being published by The Sun because he was a minor when the affair began, is in his final year of law school. This year, he told police and social workers about the affair and charges were filed.
Friends, former students, their parents and Kahn's family members wrote letters asking Bollinger for leniency. Kahn was originally charged with one count of child abuse and one count of perverted practice. The charges were reduced to the single count of child abuse.
