A 27-year-old Columbia man was charged yesterday in two burglaries Wednesday at The Mall in Columbia, Howard County police said.
Timothy M. Williams of the 6400 block of Mellow Wine Way in River Hill faces two counts of burglary, one count of theft, one count of attempted felony theft and two counts of destruction of property, police said.
About 8: 15 a.m. Wednesday, police said, two employees at Lerner Shops walked into a back stock room at the store and spotted a man who fled out the rear door with an ATM card from an employee's purse, police said.
Officer John Waugh and Pfc. Robert Leaf discovered that the rear door had been pried open, police said.
Leaf then inspected nearby Britches Great Outdoors, where a burglar alarm had sounded earlier, and found that the back door had also been pried open -- but a deadbolt had not been locked the night before, police said.
Police said they showed the Lerner employees a photograph lineup and obtained an arrest warrant for a Britches employee, police said.
Williams turned himself in yesterday morning at Southern District Police Station in Scaggsville.
