Two Western Maryland College football players who were arrested on marijuana possession charges Monday may face a hearing by a campus judicial board.
Kevin D. Kramer and Steven R. Wilcox, both 19 and sophomores, were arrested by Westminster police after a search of their apartment in the Greens of Westminster.
Kramer and Wilcox started for the Green Terror, Kramer as a nose guard and Wilcox as a punter.
Philip R. Sayre, dean of student affairs, had not decided yesterday whether to convene the college honor and conduct board, which hears charges of violations of student rules.
If Kramer and Wilcox are allowed to remain on campus, they will remain eligible to play football, a college spokeswoman said.
Lt. Dean Brewer said police reported finding about a half-ounce of marijuana, with a street value of approximately $200, scales and marijuana-smoking devices in their apartment.
Police charged Kramer with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, maintaining a common nuisance and theft of equipment valued at more than $300.
Police charged Wilcox with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Kramer was released on $10,000 unsecured bail, and Wilcox was released on his own recognizance.
College spokeswoman Joyce E. Muller said the decision about whether to have a hearing will depend on whether police have evidence that indicates drugs were sold to students on campus or that equipment was stolen from campus.
If the honor and conduct board finds students have violated rules and an appeals board determines that the hearing was fairly conducted, students who are not expelled or suspended remain eligible for extracurricular activities, she said.
The arrest came at the start of final exam week at the Westminster college, but police Lt. Dean Brewer said the timing was coincidental. Police obtained a search warrant for the apartment based on information from a confidential source.
"We have to base it on a timely fashion when the information is fresh," Brewer said.
