Eighth-ranked Overlea began yesterday's pivotal Baltimore County match against No. 9 Owings Mills sporting a make-shift lineup after three wrestlers failed to make weight.
The visiting Eagles then spent the next 90 minutes throwing theirs around.
Owings Mills built a 31-6 lead after seven matches and cruised to an easier-than-expected 44-19 win over the Falcons, thought to be its chief competition in the county 1A-2A League.
"It was an early Christmas present," said Owings Mills coach Guy Pritzker.
The win helped avenge last year's half-point loss to Overlea in the regional championships.
"It really feels good because they beat us last year in the regions," said Eagles 135-pounder Drew Bowers, ranked No. 4 in the state, who scored a first-period pin over regional runner-up James Laubach.
Overlea (1-1), however, also helped the Eagles' cause.
Starters Chaudry Aszat (130), Scott Krammer (140) and Zack Sergotick ( 171) each failed to make weight, forcing coach Bruce Malinowski to scramble for a make-shift lineup.
The Falcons replaced Aszat with JV call-up James Wilder, who was pinned by Bowers, forfeited their match at 140 and replaced Sergotick with Mike Horst, who suffered a 12-2 setback to Kenny Ricker.
The three losses were key on a day when Overlea managed just four wins.
"You can't lose three starters and beat a team like [Owings Mills]," said Overlea coach Bruce Malinowski. "That hurt. I thought it would be close going in but not having those three means a lot."
Said Bowers: "It made them not be able to wrestle around our guys."
For Owings Mills (2-0), however, the win was sweet nonetheless.
"The guys really wrestled good," said Pritzker. "They wrestled with heart and wrestled for each other.
Other winners for the Eagles included Clayton Arnold (103), Scott Silverstein (112), Neal Saval (119), Arsen Arapatayen (130), Justin Myers (140) -- by forfeit -- Matt Summerlein (160) and heavyweight Travis Anderson.
Both teams also hammered Randallstown in the tri-match -- Owings Mills by 71-3, and Overlea, 70-6.
