Accountant for Columbia company accused of thefts in $333,000 check-writing scheme

An accountant for a major U.S. food distributor was charged yesterday with writing $333,000 in company checks to a Reisterstown man, Howard County police said.

Patrick J. Belzner, 29, of Baltimore set up fake accounting invoices and wrote several checks for U.S. Foodservice Inc. in Columbia, police said. Belzner was charged with four counts of theft.

Christopher T. St. Ange, 48, is accused of setting up the fraudulent bank accounts using the name of an existing company. St. Ange was president of Reisterstown-based C&C; Piping and Welding Inc., which filed for bankruptcy protection in 1997.

St. Ange also is charged with four counts of theft.
