Gov. Parris N. Glendening proposed yesterday that a Baltimore County wild land be named for two longtime environmentalists who have devoted more than 25 years to developing the state's wilderness system.
If the state Board of Public Works approves, the Mingo Branch-Bush Cabin Run wild land in Gunpowder Falls State Park will be renamed in honor of Ajax Eastman and Elizabeth Hartline.
Eastman and Hartline, county residents, are co-chairwomen of the Maryland Wildlands Committee. The group pressed for legislation in 1996 and 1997 that protected more than 25,000 acres of state-owned land from mining, logging and any access by motor vehicle.
Glendening also bestowed the honorary title Admiral of the Chesapeake Bay on Eastman, who is retiring as a longtime trustee of the Maryland Environmental Trust. The award goes to Marylanders who have contributed to the state and the bay.
