A 44-year-old Clarksville man arrested Thursday after a police officer was assaulted was in serious but stable condition yesterday after trying to hang himself in his holding cell, Howard County police said.
Gary Nelson Winger of the 6600 block of Haviland Mill Road was found unconscious about 9: 40 p.m., hanging by his shirt in a cell at Southern District headquarters in Laurel, said Sgt. Morris Carroll, a Police Department spokesman.
Winger was unconscious at Maryland Shock Trauma Center last night.
Three officers responded to Winger's home about 8: 30 p.m. Thursday after one of his children reported a dispute between Winger and his wife, Carroll said.
One of the officers, Cpl. Michael Hajek, was shoved at the scene.
Winger, who police said was intoxicated, was arrested and taken to Southern District headquarters.
Police placed Winger in a holding cell about 9: 05 p.m., and he began screaming and shaking the bars, Carroll said.
Winger was still making noise when officers checked on him at 9: 30 p.m.
All was quiet 10 minutes later, and a booking officer found Winger unconscious.
"He had tied his shirt around his neck and attempted to hang himself," Carroll said.
No charges have been filed in the assault on the police officer.
