Museums by candlelight

Twenty-three heritage sites throughout Frederick County will be illuminated Saturday during the 10th annual self-guided tour of "Museums by Candlelight." The family program is presented by the Frederick Historic Sites Consortium as part of a holiday Children's Weekend. Tours include interpretive programs, living history vignettes, hearth cooking and traditional craft demonstrations, hands-on art activities and storytelling.

Due to the number of locations and area covered, the "Museums by Candlelight" guide suggests three itineraries for visitors to follow - a North Frederick Route, including the Seton Shrine in Emmitsburg and the Heritage Farm Preservation Society in Walkersville; a Frederick City itinerary that includes the Schifferstadt Architectural Museum and the National Museum of Civil War Medicine; and a South Frederick Route with the Lamar Cultural and Heritage Center in Middletown and Ostertag Farm in Myersville.

Admission is free. Hours are 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The "Museums by Candlelight" guide, complete with a map and program description for each site, is available at the Frederick Visitor Center, 19 E. Church St. Call 800-999-3613.

Pyle and Wyeths at Delaware Art Museum

For new insights into the art of Howard Pyle and the Wyeths - N.C., Andrew and Jamie - attend "Wondrous Strange: Pyle, Wyeth, Wyeth, & Wyeth," opening today at the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington.

The exhibition focuses on an aspect of American realism that stems from illustrator Pyle and manifests in the work of his student N.C. Wyeth, N.C.'s son Andrew, and Andrew's son Jamie. The more than 100 works include the eerie, the uncanny, the otherworldly and the unexpected.

The exhibit runs through Feb. 21. The museum is at 2301 Kentmere Parkway. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday-Saturday; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. During this exhibition, admission is increased to $8, $6 seniors, $5.50 students, children 6 and under free. Call 302-571-0220.
