Stroman gets Hopkins past Shoremen His career-high 19 points spark Blue Jays, 69-62; State

Jake Stroman scored a career-best 19 points and Joel Wertman added 19 points and 12 rebounds to help Johns Hopkins to a 69-62 victory over visiting Washington College last night in a Centennial Conference game.

After battling to a 23-23 tie at halftime, the teams traded baskets for the first eight minutes of the second half before an 11-3 run by Hopkins put the Blue Jays up for good at 50-41 with 7: 02 left in the game. Stroman scored six points during the run, including back-to-back baskets to cap the spurt.

Hopkins (6-2, 2-0) out-rebounded Washington College, 40-33, and shot 56 percent (15 of 27) in the second half. The Shoremen (4-3, 1-1) were led by Steve DeVore's 16 points.

Western Maryland 77, Villa Julie 62: Brian Tombs scored 17 and Brian Billman added 16 to lead the Green Terror (3-3) past the host Mustangs (0-7). Western Maryland converted only six field goals in the second half, but hit 21 of 33 free throws for the victory.

Women

Johns Hopkins 66, Washington College 53: Leslie Ritter had 16 points as well as six steals and five assists as the host Blue Jays (7-1, 3-0 in the Centennial Conference) ran past the Shoremen (4-3, 1-1).
