Oakland Mills 130-pounder Dena Glisan is believed to have become the first Maryland girl to score a pin over a varsity opponent when she beat Great Mills' Justin Spedden in 5 minutes, 55 seconds during last weekend's Chopticon Tournament.

Glisan, 17, won two of her four bouts, also posting a 6-1 decision over Patuxent's Bryce Beckner. The pin came nearly a year after she became the state's first female wrestler to score a technical fall over a varsity rival.

"It didn't really hit me until my dad pointed out later on that it was my first varsity pin," said Glisan, who won the 121-pound class at the U.S. High School Girls Wrestling Association national championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., last April.

Edgewood senior Pam Loss last year became the first girl to win a varsity match.
