Firefighters from four counties help Pa. volunteers battle mountain blaze

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Firefighters and medical crews were dispatched from Carroll, Frederick, Washington and Baltimore counties yesterday to relieve weary Pennsylvania volunteers battling a 100-acre mountain blaze in Adams County, about five miles northeast of Emmitsburg, authorities said.

Pennsylvania fire officials said 250 firefighters and about 50 civilians worked throughout Sunday night to contain the flames spread by extremely dry conditions and light winds.

"We just had to get help from Maryland to relieve our personnel," a spokeswoman for Adams County said.

Twelve pieces of equipment and more than 25 firefighters were sent to Jacks Mountain from Union Bridge, New Windsor, Harney, Pleasant Valley, Winfield, Gamber, Taneytown, Manchester, Reese and Lineboro.

Reported injuries were few and minor. There were no evacuations.
