The Police Department, Baltimore Ravens and Maryland Office Interiors announced yesterday a partnership to promote academic achievement and support educational programs at Police Athletic League centers.
Among the Ravens pledging donations are: wide receivers Michael Jackson and Patrick Johnson, $100 for every touchdown catch; defensive end Michael McCrary, $500 for each sack; linebacker Ray Lewis, $100 for every 10 tackles; and running back Errict Rhett, $100 for every touchdown. Maryland Office Interiors will match each pledge.
Police Commissioner Thomas C. Frazier said the partnership "provides young people with viable academic opportunities and
challenges they otherwise may not have had."
Union members attend rally to protest ABC lockout
More than 100 unionized workers from the Baltimore-Washington area were at the Inner Harbor last night to support members of the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians Local No. 31, who are locked out of their jobs by American Broadcasting Co.
The rally was held outside the ESPN Zone sports club where ABC was broadcasting its Monday Night Football show. About 2,200 NABET workers -- primarily camera workers, desk assistants and publicists -- had been working without a contract since April 1997. The lockout began Nov. 3 after a one-day walkout by the union.
A principal issue in the dispute is the use of free-lancers to do union work.
Vigil, dedication to honor slain retired police officer
A group of West Baltimore ministers will hold a candlelight prayer vigil tonight and dedicate a community building in honor of retired city police officer Oliver T. Murdock, 73, who was fatally shot during an apparent robbery outside his home in the 2500 block of Riggs Ave. on Nov. 27.
The Save the Youth and Stop the Killing Coalition operates the "safety house" at 2858 Harlem Ave., a rowhouse donated by the city in June 1997 and used as a community meeting place.
Longtime friends and family described Murdock as a gregarious and helpful man who volunteered in his west-side community and acted as a grandfather to neighborhood children.

Man lying in driveway injured by police cruiser
CATONSVILLE
CATONSVILLE -- A man lying in a driveway near Frederick Road was run over and seriously injured early yesterday by a county police car driven by an officer who had been searching for him, police said.
Police said Charles Lewis Smith, 39, of the first block of Fustings Ave. was lying on a portion of the driveway that is a steep incline when Officer Richard Dorsey Craig drove down the incline and ran over him at 2: 12 a.m. Craig was investigating a report of a man lying in the road.
Police said the area was poorly lighted, and the angle of the incline made it impossible for Craig to see Smith. Police said Smith was in serious but stable condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.
