Jean Elizabeth Mallis, 73, nurse, painter

Jean Elizabeth Mallis, a former nurse and longtime Timonium resident, died at home of cancer Friday. She was 73.

Born and raised in Washington, the former Jean E. Nilsson

graduated from the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 1947 and became head nurse of the surgical unit at what is now University of Maryland Medical Center.

In 1948, she married Dr. Nicholas Mallis, who practiced urology for many years before his retirement in 1987.

Mrs. Mallis was an accomplished painter who exhibited her work at Muse Studio of Fine Arts in Timonium.

She was an original member of Epiphany Episcopal Church in Timonium. She was also a longtime member of St. Agnes Hospital Auxiliary.

A golfer, she belonged to Baltimore Country Club for many years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Nicholas Mallis Jr. of Wayne, N.J., and the Rev. Steven Michael Mallis of Taylor, Pa.; a brother, Knut Nilsson Jr. of Ellicott City; and three grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Epiphany Episcopal, 2216 Pot Spring Road.
