New Latin flavor

In the past, 509-13 S. Broadway has been a dinner theater and a cooking school. Now the Latin Palace, an entertainment complex with a 300-seat restaurant, Las Palmas, is scheduled to open there the day after Christmas. Located on the mezzanine, the restaurant will share the huge space with a private club, game rooms and private dining rooms.

Owner Enrique Rivadeneir doesn't want to compete with his friend Jose Gutierrez, the owner-chef of the Cafe Madrid a couple of doors away, so Las Palmas' menu will emphasize Caribbean, South American and Central American food rather than Spanish.

"It's a menu that will cater to the Latin American community as a whole," he says.

The Latin Palace will have live entertainment as well, including Spanish guitar music and salsa dancing on the weekends.

A follow-up call

You expect good service at an expensive restaurant, but Shula's Steak House in the Omni Hotel goes most places one better. A friend reports that after he and his uncle ate there, someone on Shula's staff called the next day to make sure they had been happy with their food and the service.

Who's serving holiday dinner?

Every year readers call wondering what restaurants are going to be serving Christmas dinner. I know there aren't many out there that do (unless your idea of Christmas dinner is Chinese food). I'll be glad, however, to print information about any places that will be open Dec. 25 with a special holiday menu. Let me know as soon as possible at the addresses or fax number below.
