Evelyn McPhail, 68, a former co-chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, died Thanksgiving Day at her home in Jackson, Miss., of complications from injuries she suffered in a 1997 car accident.

Mrs. McPhail, who as a child lived in an orphanage, had a reputation as a kind but determined worker on the political front lines for 35 years. She led the Mississippi GOP from 1987 to 1993. Under her leadership, Republicans claimed the governor's job for the first time this century with Kirk Fordice's 1991 victory over incumbent Ray Mabus.

Since the accident, big-name Republicans had tracked her progress and contributed to help pay her mounting medical bills. Former President George Bush headlined a recent fund-raiser in Jackson.

Bill Glaub, 49, Chrysler Canada's president, died Thursday while on vacation in the U.S. Virgin Islands, only seven months after taking the helm of Canada's third-largest carmaker. There were conflicting reports about how he died. An official at the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital said Mr. Glaub apparently suffered a heart attack while on a beach on St. Thomas island. Chrysler Canada said it appeared that Mr. Glaub had died in a boating accident while on his honeymoon with his wife, Jan, in St. Thomas.

Doris Niles, 94, an American concert and ballet dancer known for her Spanish repertory, died Nov. 15 in Santa Paula, Calif.
