Bonnie J. Brereton, 50, Baltimore police officer

Bonnie J. Brereton, a former Baltimore police officer, died Tuesday of lung cancer at home in Swoope, Va. She was 50.

She joined the Police Department in 1978 and left after 11 years to become an inmate counselor at Augusta (Va.) Correctional Center. Since 1994, she had been a support enforcement specialist for the Virginia Division of Child Support Enforcement.

Born in Pasadena, Ms. Brereton graduated from Glen Burnie High School and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Baltimore.

Services for Ms. Brereton will be held at 11 a.m. today in Virginia.

She is survived by her husband of eight years, Edward L. Gordon; a brother, Richard J. Brereton Jr. of New Bern, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Heather R. Gordon of Waynesboro, Va.; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Kathy Krokos of Glen Burnie.
