Police throughout Maryland yesterday announced plans to increase patrols of shopping centers, malls and retail corridors during the holiday shopping season, traditionally the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

With more people shopping, incidents of theft, shoplifting and auto break-ins typically rise, said police officials participating in a holiday safe-shopper program organized by the Maryland Retailers Association.

"Even the perception of risk can be damaging to retailers," said Tom Saquella, president of the retailers' group.

Retailers and law enforcement officials are urging shoppers to take precautions such as keeping their cars locked and packages out of sight, carrying only a few packages at a time and noting the store or entrance closest to the car.

The Maryland State Police will station undercover troopers in malls and shopping centers, said Lt. Col. Jesse Graybill.

Police officials from Baltimore and Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Howard counties also plan increased patrols in and around shopping centers.
