Work will begin Monday on a new roof for the Sykesville municipal offices in the Town House on Main Street.
The town has awarded a $34,000 contract to Ruff Roofers of Baltimore. The company restored the dome of the State Capitol in Annapolis more than 20 years ago.
The Town House project will take about 10 working days, because crews must remove three layers of roofing before adding a new one.
Sykesville has completed several projects on the interior of the century-old Town House and repointed the chimneys.
Officials had hoped that a Maryland Historic Trust grant would pay for the roof repairs and other exterior work, but the state rejected the town's $70,000 grant application. Local officials decided to go ahead with the roof replacement.
"The roof is the most pressing need as far as repairs go," said Matthew H. Candland, town manager.
