Third-ranked Notre Dame Prep became the first team to shut out No. 1-ranked John Carroll in regulation yesterday, but the Pirates could not hold off the Patriots in overtime.

Jenny Biscoe scored the game winner 2: 30 into the second 10-minute overtime period, flicking a point-blank shot over Pirates goalkeeper Lauren Stone, who had made 21 saves.

The 1-0 victory boosted the Patriots (15-1 overall) to 12-1 in the Catholic League A Division, the league's best record going into next week's tournament.

The Pirates (14-3 overall, 10-3 league) dodged bullets all afternoon. Stone, who had nine shutouts, made five saves in overtime.

"It took Biscoe and double overtime to get us," said NDP coach Mark Deaton. "Lauren had some spectacular saves. She was carrying us, because they had some real nice shots."

The Patriots outshot NDP, 29-6, for the game and 9-1 in overtime. They hit posts three times and had several other near misses, including two balls Pirates defenders headed off the goal line.

And then there were about a dozen diving saves by Stone. The freshman keeper stole several goals from Biscoe before the second-team All-Metro junior finally nailed one home.

Katie McAvoy sent a skimming header to Biscoe, who was unmarked in the middle of the box. Stone tried to reach the ball before Biscoe could shoot, but once she committed low, Biscoe had time to loop the ball over her.

"I tried to get it before it went off her foot," said Stone. "It was a perfect shot. There wasn't much I could do."
