St. Martin takes Howard job

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Art St. Martin, who coached six girls state championships at Brooklyn Park, is the new boys basketball coach at Howard.

St. Martin coached 12 years at Brooklyn Park and won state titles in 1982, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989. His career record there was 218-69.

St. Martin left Brooklyn Park in 1989 to coach the Catonsville Community College women.

"We're fortunate to have a man of his caliber taking the job," Howard athletic director Vince Parnell said.

St. Martin, 52, is a retired school teacher, who taught physical education for 30 years at Linthicum Elementary School.

Parnell said that St. Martin was one of four candidates who applied for the job. At Howard, he fills a job left vacant by the death of former coach Craig O'Connell in August.
