Brosius quietly continues surge

THE BALTIMORE SUN

NEW YORK -- Ask Derek Jeter who's been the Yankees' MVP this season and he'll say third baseman Scott Brosius. Ask who leads the club in RBIs during the playoffs and the answer will be the same.

Brosius ran his total to 10 in the first inning last night, grounding a single into left field to bring home Chili Davis for a 3-0 lead. He continues to distance himself from last season, when he hit .203 for Oakland and was dealt for pitcher Kenny Rogers in a transaction that didn't raise goosebumps among the Yankees' faithful.

He's brought chills ever since, making his first All-Star team and hitting .300 with 19 homers and a career-high 98 RBIs while batting in the lower third of the order.

Brosius also singled in the third and fifth innings to raise his postseason average to .359 (14-for-39).
