Quarterback Edward Byrnes threw for 156 yards and two touchdowns in leading the College of New Jersey to a 21-14 win yesterday over Salisbury State before 1,486 at Sea Gull Stadium.
The loss dropped the Sea Gulls to 0-4. The Lions (5-1) ran their winning streak over Salisbury to six games.
The clinching touchdown was set up after the Lions blocked their third punt of the game. An 11-yard pass from Byrnes to Jason Acosta gave College of New Jersey a 21-7 lead with 12: 14 left to play.
Salisbury scored on its ensuing possession to pull within 21-14 and got the ball back with 1: 14 remaining, but Ray D'Ambrosio's fourth-down pass was broken up.
The Sea Gulls' Tony Ellis ran for a career-high 163 yards.
Frostburg State 31, SUNY-Brockport 14: Ryan Lee threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns to lead the host Bobcats (5-1) over the Vikings (0-6).
Greg Cooper caught five of Lee's 16 completions for a game-high 165 yards, including a 71-yard touchdown that gave Frostburg a 21-0 lead at halftime. Chris Perkins caught a 7-yard touchdown on the team's first possession.
Seth Quimby ran seven times for 94 yards and two touchdowns.
The Bobcats defense sacked SUNY-Brockport quarterback Jason Mangone six times.
Bowie State 20, Elizabeth City State 19: Stacy Plater caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Jimmy Whitehead as the host Bulldogs (4-2, 2-2 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) used a third-quarter comeback to beat the Vikings (1-6, 0-4).
Elizabeth City failed on two of its three extra-point tries.
Plater and Whitehead also hooked up on a 44-yard touchdown pass midway through the third. Ray Hawkins led Bowie State's rushing game with 16 carries for 137 yards. Defensively, Mike Cox had 11 tackles.
