Cleveland Amory,81, best-selling author and animal rights pioneer, died Wednesday at his Manhattan home, according to a statement from The Fund for Animals Inc., which he founded and led. His 1987 book "The Cat Who Came for Christmas," inspired by his cat, Polar Bear and combining anecdotes, cat lore and humor, sold 1.5 million copies. He will be buried near his cat at Black Beauty Ranch, the East Texas home to hundreds of abused animals that was Amory's lifelong dream.
