Cleveland Amory,81, best-selling author and animal rights pioneer, died Wednesday at his Manhattan home, according to a statement from The Fund for Animals Inc., which he founded and led. His 1987 book "The Cat Who Came for Christmas," inspired by his cat, Polar Bear and combining anecdotes, cat lore and humor, sold 1.5 million copies. He will be buried near his cat at Black Beauty Ranch, the East Texas home to hundreds of abused animals that was Amory's lifelong dream.

Richard Cloke,82, one of the surviving members of an American force that fought in the Spanish Civil War, died on Tuesday in Los Angeles of a heart attack.

Adolf Althoff,85, a prominent member of a circus family honored for saving a Jewish couple from the Nazis, died Wednesday of

heart failure in Stolberg, Germany.

Ikuo Ikeda,58, who used his family's publishing company to popularize American baseball in Japan, died Monday of liver failure.

Lewis G. Schaeneman Jr.,67, a former chairman and chief executive officer of Stop & Shop Supermarket Co., died Oct. 10 of complications from recent surgery.

Fujiko Fujima,Fujiko Fujima 90, a dancer and choreographer for the traditional Kabuki theater, died Wednesday of stomach cancer in Tokyo.
