Mission: To provide a forum for ideas centered on contemporary art and to increase opportunities for artists and the community to engage in the visual arts through exhibitions and art education. School 33 Art Center is an artist-directed visual-art center administered by the Mayor's Advisory Committee on Art and Culture. Work is exhibited in three on-site galleries.
Latest accomplishment: The establishment of "After School There's Art," an educational outreach program at three city schools where art is not part of the curriculum on a regular basis. The visual-art-based program, led by local artists, includes mural painting, quilt-making and photography.
On the horizon: The center's annual fund-raiser, "Lotta Art," is scheduled for Oct. 24. The event includes an exhibition of 150 donated pieces of art, which will be offered in a drawing to guests. Opening Oct. 31, an exhibition of new photography by Judith Goodman, Satre Stuelke and Keith Tishken in Gallery I; new paintings by Gerard Devlin in Gallery II; and an installation by James Bills in the Installation Space. And opening next May, "East Meets West," an exhibition of paintings by Dhruvi Acharya of Baltimore and Bari Kumar of Los Angeles. The work of both artists reflects their Indian heritage - religion, traditions and social history.
About the center: Membership: 300. Attendance: 24,000 annually. Operating budget: $180,000.
Where and when: 1427 Light St. Hours: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the gallery; 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for the center. Call 410-396-4641.
Lois Borgenicht, president of the board of directors: "Being part of the center has introduced me to many fine Baltimore artists. And through the center's educational programs, adults and children have become aware of art - something they might not have been interested in before."
