Walter Uphoff, 85, one of the Depression-era Socialists who pushed for the social policies that helped form Wisconsin's progressive tradition, died Sept. 26 in Oregon, Wis. He was a Socialist candidate for the U.S. Senate in 1944 and for governor in 1946.
