Triple-option quarterback Randy Salisbury tossed first-half touchdown passes of 29 and 34 yards to Mike Hall as Southern-Anne Arundel shocked No. 2-ranked Calvert Hall, 12-7, Harwood last night.
The win was the Class 2A Bulldogs' first of the season after three losses and the Cardinals' first loss in four games.
"It was just a great effort by our entire team and coaching staff," said Southern coach Russ Meyers, whose team was routed 43-26 by the Hall last year. "Our defense was especially great tonight. They outweighed us by 40 to 50 pounds a man across the line."
Southern linebackers James Cramer and Pat Dowling had 16 and 11 tackles, respectively.
No. 3 Eastern Tech 36, Franklin 0: Ray Jones had 11 carries for 157 yards and three first-half touchdowns for the Mustangs (4-0). Anthony Lawston had three catches for 91 yards and one touchdown.
Patterson 41, No. 7 Poly 6: Unranked Patterson rushed for 327 yards on the way to upsetting the Engineers at Patterson Park's Utz Twardowicz Field yesterday.
The loss was Poly's second straight by a wide margin after winning its first two games. The Engineers suffered one of the school's worst defeats, 49-0, last Friday to No. 1 Gilman.
Brian Hopson had a memorable day for Patterson, rushing for 152 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries. On defense, he made seven tackles and recovered a fumble. Michael Crawford rushed 11 times for 69 yards and two touchdowns for the Clippers.
No. 5 Bel Air 34, Joppatowne 0: Justin Amrein rushed for two touchdowns to lead the Bobcats (4-0) to the shutout over the visiting Mariners (0-4). Kyle George had a 65-yard TD run, Jimmy Brown a 10-yarder and Adam Rafalski threw a 40-yard scoring pass to Chris Reynolds.
No. 9 Broadneck 50, Gwynn Park 28: Martel Threadgill ran for 248 yards and a season-high four touchdowns for the host
Bruins (4-0). Threadgill had touchdowns runs of 4, 71, 40 and 8 yards.
No. 11 Aberdeen 36, South River 7: Chuck Faison threw for two touchdowns and 120 yards on 4-for-11 passing as the host Eagles (3-1) beat the Seahawks (2-2). Both of Stephon Watson's receptions for the Eagles went for touchdowns.
No. 15 John Carroll 32, Severn 30: Quarterback Mike Leatherman threw for three touchdowns and 267 yards as the Patriots (3-0) edged the Admirals (1-2). Ian Berkley caught each of Leatherman's TD passes, which went for 45, 70 and 80 yards. John Carroll also got 233 rushing yards from Scooter Monroe.
