Miniature skipjacks, bateaux, bugeyes, marine pile drivers and other workboats of the Chesapeake's past will be on display Sundays through October at the Captain Salem Avery House.

From the 10-inch sneak box, a model of the quiet gunned vessel once used by watermen to hunt ducks, to the 4-foot Skipjack and a model of the rare Chesapeake Bay oyster boat, about 65 models of workboats will be on display.

One of the larger models, by Joseph Di Pietro Chester in Kent County, was built following a photograph. Others, by Tom Cosden of Lothian, are detailed with miniature dinettes, stoves and bunk beds.

The exhibit is open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays through Oct. 25 at the museum on Shady Side Road in Shady Side.

Flea market is scheduled to help animal rescue group

One man's trash is another man's treasure. This weekend, visitors to the Trash 'N Treasure flea market in front of the Ordnance Road Petsmart in Glen Burnie might find a little of both.

Books, children's toys and games, clothing, music and household items will be for sale from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday to raise money for Heaven's Gate Animal Rescue, an all-volunteer, nonprofit animal rescue organization.

Artists to demonstrate techniques, show works

The League of Maryland Craftsmen, which represents 130 Maryland artisans, is sponsoring artists' demonstrations this fall from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., beginning Sunday at the group's Savage Mill store in the new weave building. This weekend, water colorist Carolyn Councell will demonstrate her painting technique and have several works on display for sale.

Visitors can see fused glass, silver, photography, wool weaving, polymer clay ceramics and fossil ivory engraving. The demonstrations will be on Sundays in October and Saturdays and Sundays through November.
