An Eldersburg man was killed early yesterday on Interstate 70 when the car he was driving veered off the highway and hit a tractor-trailer parked on the shoulder of the westbound side near the Marriottsville exit ramp.

State police are investigating what caused Lawrence A. Schultz III, 28, to drive his 1987 Acura Integra off the road at 3: 49 a.m and hit the rear of the tractor-trailer.

James Bennett of Corryton, Tenn., who was resting in the tractor-trailer, was not injured, police said.

Schultz, a recent graduate of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County who was a postal retail clerk, was on his way to his home in Eldersburg when the accident occurred, said his father, Lawrence A. Schultz Sr.

"This is very difficult," Schultz said. "He was well-liked and touched the lives of a whole lot of people. We're going to miss him."
