A Sykesville man was freed yesterday on a $7,500 property bond after his arrest on charges of bilking Internet consumers from California to Massachusetts by falsely selling Beanie Babies.
Glen H. Brown, 27, of the 5900 block of Dale Court was arrested Wednesday on a criminal information warrant, stipulating he be held without bond until yesterday's bail review in Carroll County Circuit Court.
In court documents, prosecutors allege that between Feb. 2 and May 1, Brown advertised on the Internet that he was selling the small stuffed animals, considered valuable collectibles by many.
Numerous buyers responded and many bargained through e-mail messages to Brown, prosecutors said.
Brown insisted buyers mail a money order or cashier's check for purchases before they would be shipped, prosecutors allege. Brown is accused of collecting the money without sending the Beanie Babies.
Complaints from 13 customers formed the basis for 15 charges: two counts of theft over $300, 11 counts of theft under $300, and one count each of false advertising and theft over $300 by scheme.
Carroll County Assistant State's Attorney Linda Powell said yesterday that more complaints might be received.
A list of customers shows that orders were placed in amounts from $120 to $400 from California, Florida, Texas, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Georgia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Washington state, Missouri, North Carolina and Utah.
The orders totaled $2,537, court records showed.
No court date has been set.
