Catherine Turney,92, who wrote major 1940s screenplays that featured Bette Davis, Joan Crawford and others in tough female roles, died Sept. 9 in Los Angeles. She was the major script writer for 1945's "Mildred Pierce," which earned Miss Crawford an Academy Award. Among her other scripts were "My !c Reputation," "Cry Wolf," "One More Tomorrow," "The Man I Love" and "Winter Meeting."

Barrett Deems,83, a drummer for Louis Armstrong and Benny Goodman among other jazz greats, died Tuesday in Chicago. Known in jazz circles as "The Great Deemus," he started drumming professionally at age 15.

Peter Phillips,78, the former father-in-law of Princess Anne, died Saturday in London. He was thrust into the limelight in 1973 when his son, Mark, married Queen Elizabeth II's only daughter. The couple divorced in 1992, and the princess married Capt. Timothy Laurence.
