Private Clubs take 11-1 lead in Challenge

THE BALTIMORE SUN

The Private Clubs team won five of the seven matches that went at least to the 17th green yesterday, building an 11-1 lead on the Public Links team after the first day of the fourth annual Challenge Cup matches at Pine Ridge Golf Course.

The Publinx side played two matches even -- one in the morning foursomes and one in the afternoon better-ball -- to get its point. The 12-man teams will play singles today at Caves Valley Golf Club. The Private side leads the series 2-1.

Ross Ellberg-Bob Lentz got the morning half-point against Steve Southern and Steve Grem, and Ed Legg-James Townley had the day's closest match, playing Billy Dayton-Theron Rice even for the last five holes to get the other half-point for the Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation's entry.
