SPRINKLERS HAVE been blasting away at Severn School, watering the rolls of sod installed this summer on the athletic field.
The school is getting more than a spruce-up this year. A student center is under construction by the Annapolis architectural firm of Alt, Breeding and Schwarz and is expected to be completed by February, and a handsome brick sign is being built at the school's Maple Avenue entrance.
This edifice in mortar and brick is something of a metaphor for the enduring quality of a school that opened in 1914 as a preparatory school for young men hoping to enter the Naval Academy.
Among other changes, the entrance, one of three at the campus, is being upgraded. Chain-link fencing is being modernized. A parking lot is being added to the entrance on the Holly Street side of the campus next to the gymnasium, and new walkways are being placed from the athletic fields to the school buildings.
A new dining facility eventually will replace the original hall, and playing fields will be added.
Gary Koch, a member of the Severn Class of 1971, is in charge of construction for the student center, scheduled for dedication May 1, during alumni weekend.
Big-band concert
The Anne Arundel Community Concert Association kicks off its 47th season with the all-female big band sound of Diva -- No Man's Band at 8 p.m. Sept. 17 at Severna Park High School.
Led by drummer Sherrie Maricle, Diva's music is steeped in the tradition of the jazz masters.
This is the first in a series of five presentations for the 1998-1999 season at Severna Park High.
Admission is by season subscription only. At $15 for an adult subscription and $5 for students, this is an entertainment bargain.

Salvation Army volunteers
Here's a project for you or your organization: dressing teddy bears and filling stockings for small children to be distributed by the county Salvation Army.
