Sinister sculpture

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Jim Roberts of Westminster makes sculptures of what he considers contemporary "viruses," including the telephone, the television, the computer, organized religion and fast food restaurants. He calls these aspects of contemporary life viruses because he considers them in some way deleterious to society.

The sculptures are made of steel and other materials including the real objects he's depicting (for instance, a phone), and they stand on steel legs. A group of his works will be on exhibit for just 11 days beginning Tuesday at Western Maryland College.

At Rice Gallery in Peterson Hall of Western Maryland College, West Main Street, Sept. 8-18, noon to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Call 410-857-2599.
