Doc the DJ will be opening on the east side


The Canton bistro and martini bar Neon Moon (2522 Fait Ave.), which closed earlier this summer, is reopening next week as Doc's Eastside. The new owner is Steve Cochran, a former WQSR-radio disc jockey who was known as "the rock-n-roll doctor." (As a part-owner of Bohager's, he does have experience in the restaurant business.)

Cochran's nickname is "Doc," but why "Eastside"?

"I grew up in the east side of Baltimore," he says, "And I want [the restaurant] to have a nostalgic feel." The new decor will feature old photos of the neighborhood and screen paintings; the menu will include some traditional items like crab cakes, a Pigtown dog with kraut and wiener schnitzel. Look for Italian dishes like fresh pasta as well. "I just don't want to call the menu 'eclectic,' " Cochran says. "It sounds too new."

Persistent rumor

My vote for the most interesting restaurant rumor of the year goes to the one that has the luxe Lennys Chop House leaving the Harbor Inn Pier 5 and a branch of the Palm steak house chain moving in. It's certainly persistent, anyway.

General manager Robb Young says in the last few weeks Lennys has been getting four or five phone calls a day from customers asking if the story is true. He denies it.

The story may have gotten started because of friction between the restaurant's owner, Lenny Kaplan, and Harbor Inn owner Michael Lasky. Young describes the relationship as "the worst marriage Baltimore has ever known."

Palm spokesman Jeff Phillips says only that the company is looking at various harbor locations, and he's not sure whether the Harbor Inn is one of them.

New in Greektown

A Greek and Mediterranean restaurant has opened where Dionysus used to be at 4617-19 Eastern Ave. in Greektown. Over the years, Michael Katsaros, owner of the new Greek Islands, has had a lot of experience as chef at various restaurants around the area, including the dining rooms of the old Hilton and Holiday Inn downtown, the Charcoal Hearth, Shane's, the Corinthian and nTC Hunt Ridge. His new menu not only includes Greek fish, lamb, pasta and chicken dishes but also traditional Maryland seafood.
