Fair days Timonium: Maryland State Fair offers 10 days of farm events in convenient suburban setting.

THE BALTIMORE SUN

NOT MANY state fairs offer as much proximity to a region's population center as does Maryland's farm extravaganza that begins its 10-day run in Timonium today.

Just off an interstate highway (I-83) and directly on the light rail line, the fairgrounds give Baltimore city and suburban families a chance to take in livestock, horse shows, home arts exhibits, midway rides, garden displays, 4-H events, music performances and thoroughbred racing.

This is the 117th Maryland State Fair. It's a great entertainment value. For just $4, you get free run of the grounds, including the Timonium Race Course, an intimate setting with a close-up view of the half-mile track.

The fun continues through Labor Day, giving the State Fair the honor of ushering out the summer vacation season. It is a fine way to give children a final treat as the school year commences.

Too often we forget the rural qualities of farm life that remain a bedrock part of the American experience. The Timonium fair brings it to our doorstep.
