A West Baltimore man who was a suspect in a shooting early this month was arrested at University of Maryland Medical Center last week after police saw another man shoot him on a lTC West Baltimore street.

About 9 p.m. Aug. 14, two detectives in an unmarked car were looking for Rainey L. Shorter, 23, in connection with the Aug. 3 shooting of Glen Edwards, 21, in the 2800 block of W. Franklin St. Edwards suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the back and buttocks, police said.

One of the detectives, Sgt. Alonzo Moreland, said he and his colleague spotted Shorter's maroon Chevrolet Lumina in the 1000 block of W. Edmondson Ave. As they waited for uniformed officers to pull over the Lumina, a man came out of the shadows, walked into the middle of the street and fired at least seven times at Shorter's car.

Shorter, struck once in the right leg, drove to University of Maryland Medical Center, where police arrested him about 10 p.m. He was charged with first-degree assault with intent to murder, first-degree aggravated assault and use and possession a deadly weapon in connection with the Aug. 3 shooting.

Frederick Ruffin, 22, of the 900 block of N. Stricker St. was arrested on the same charges in connection with the shooting of Shorter.

Shorter was convicted in 1996 of possession of a controlled substance and in 1995 of breaking and entering and theft.

He is being held without bail at the Central Booking and Intake Center.
