Hampstead Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to raise the salaries of future mayors and council members, to take effect after next year's election.

The mayor's salary will increase to $4,800 from $1,000 a year, and council members' pay will increase from $500 to $2,400.

No one spoke at a public hearing on the proposal before the vote.

The current town salaries are in the lower range for Maryland municipalities, said Town Manager Neil Ridgely, who introduced the proposed pay raises. They will take effect after the May 1999 elections.

Ridgely also sought and received authorization from the council Tuesday night to write a resolution increasing the compensation for members of the town's planning commission.

He suggested changing their pay from $200 a year to $50 per board meeting plus $20 for other meetings that members attend on behalf of the commission.

Fire

Hampstead: Firefighters from Hampstead and Arcadia, Baltimore County, responded at 9: 37 p.m. Wednesday to a brush fire on Houcksville Road. Units were out 10 minutes.
