THE BALTIMORE SUN

Astros: Mike Hampton's double in the third inning was his fourth of the season, tops among Houston pitchers.

Brewers: Outfielder Marc Newfield left the game in the fifth inning with a bruised left shin. He is day-to-day. After too many runners were precariously waved home recently, the team switched coaches on the bases for the first time. It moved Doug Mansolino, who normally coaches first, to third in place of Joel Youngblood, who went to first.

Cardinals: Mark McGwire has 122 walks and has struck out 108 times. Catcher Tom Pagnozzi made his first start since July 24. Rookie Eli Marrero has become the team's everyday player at the position. Ray Lankford leads the team with 34 RBIs since the All-Star break.

Mets: During John Olerud's streak, he batted .461, and he entered the game with six consecutive multihit games. The NL denied the team's protest of a July 31 game with the Dodgers over an inaccurate lineup card.
