The hot shoe

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Running shoes aren't just for running anymore. They're for posing and trend-setting '70s-style. Among fashion-conscious shoppers, the retro shoe is the must-have for fall.

"Every company is kinda' doing it," says Bree Gelber, an editor at Seventeen magazine. Nordstrom's athletic-shoe vendors are all "getting back to their roots," says Jennifer Wertlieb, the store's East Coast buyer for women.

DKNY has come out with the Retro Jogger, a "very '70s looking running shoe," according to Wertlieb, that can be worn with trendy apparel such as big-bottom jeans. Adidas has the Superstar, a white shell-toed shoe with black stripes. For New Balance, it's the 576, says Wertlieb, a running shoe with a colorful suede upper that comes in deep red, blue, or a greenish hue.
