Elizabeth Barrett Browning

(1806-1861)

was widely acclaimed as a poet in her lifetime. An invalid from the age of 15, as the result of a spinal injury, she was 40 years old when she eloped from her father's house with the poet Robert Browning. Her diary covers her life prior to the elopement.
