War in Solomons

Watch troops re-enact World War II Marine exercises aboard the John W. Brown at the 56th anniversary of the U.S. Naval Amphibious Training Base in Solomons this weekend.

The commemoration will also feature newsreels, amphibious landing training films, exhibits and living history programs. The Southern Maryland Concert and Swing Bands will bring the ceremonies to a close with hit tunes from the '40s and '50s.

Events run 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons. Tickets required for selected programs. Call 410-326-2042, Ext. 32.

The write stuff

More than 200 exhibitors will show, sell, buy, repair and discuss pens of all ages and styles at the seventh annual Washington Collectible Pen SuperShow this weekend in McLean, Va.

Choose from an array of trendy pens in Victorian, art nouveau and art deco styles, or try your hand at calligraphy in the interactive expos. Develop a penchant for pen-collecting at a free seminar. And don't forget to take pens for repair or evaluation.

The show runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel at Tysons Corner II Mall, 1700 Tysons Blvd. Admission is $5; free for children under 12. Call 703-506-4300.
