July 29: Now that the Mexican War is over, the Army regulation requiring officers and men to wear short hair and whiskers, and wholly interdicting mustaches, (except among the cavalry) is restored. An order from the War Department at Washington so declares.

July 29: The members of the police department who have the taste for wearing colored shirts at all times were greatly taken aback yesterday at a notice from the commissioners prohibiting any but white shirts to be worn by the men while on duty. The shirts may not necessarily be starched ones, and the outing shirt is permissible so long as it is white.

July 25: Washington, July 24 (AP) -- Death wrote "30" today to the career of Mrs. Eleanor Medill Patterson, publisher of the Washington Times-Herald. She was found dead at her home in nearby Marlboro, Md., apparently having been stricken while reading.
