In yesterday's editions, The Sun reported that Del. Robert L. Flanagan, a Howard County Republican, said that prosecuting Linda Tripp was a politically motivated act by Democrats trying to protect President Clinton. Flanagan said yesterday that he was referring to a letter about the Tripp matter signed by 49 Democratic state legislators and forwarded to State Prosecutor Stephen Montanarelli, as well as phone calls to the prosecutor, as politically motivated acts to protect Clinton. He said he was not being critical of Montanarelli's handling of the case.
