A construction worker was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center yesterday after being struck by a two-ton concrete block on a construction site in Cecil County, state police said.

Theresa Walters, 39, of Henderson, Caroline County, was working on the southbound ramp of Interstate 95 near the Route 272 overpass when a crane hauling blocks swung wildly, knocking her into an opening on a flatbed truck, crushing her left leg and breaking her right leg in two places.

Walters, an employee of James Julian Inc. in Cecil County, was in critical condition last night.

Tfc. Earnest Tullis of the Maryland State Police said Walters was standing on the truck hooking the blocks to the crane's cable yesterday before they were lifted off and away from the truck. Crane operator Brian Kevin Bradley, 37, of New Castle, Del., was lifting a block when the accident occurred, Tullis said.

"There were four blocks to be lifted and they had successfully placed three when the crane carrying the forth swung out of control," Tullis said. "There is an opening about a foot and a half wide on top of the flatbed's trailer and she was knocked down into that."
